Why do people often remeber the same occasion differently?

  1. Perception. Different perceptions cause different memories to be created. State of mind will also play a factor and personality can shape what one makes of an occaison

  2. at the time they may have been thinking about different things or not be paying attention. but they could have wanted the situation to be different therefore they could have subconsciously changed their memory. or maybe the event was so distressful they forcibly forget because they wanted to so much they actually cannot recall what happened - it is just a blank moment

  3. Absolutely - isn't it easier to remember something in a way that suits your purpose? How many of us remember an incident in a way that makes us feel better about it? Ask your parents about your childhood - if you have siblings discuss something that happened when you were younger and see how differently you remember it.
